Clinical research on a new iris retractor model

Purpose:

To study a new model of iris retractor for cataract phacoemulsification in clinical practice.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Ural State Medical Academy, Ekaterinburg, Russian Federation.

Methods:

The polymer iris retractor has a form of a closed loop consisting of four pairs of symmetrical petals. Two oppositional symmetrical petals are made of rectangular shape (under iris placement), while the other two petals are made of triangular shape (over iris placement). The diameter of a square pupil after implantation is 6,0 mm in a diagonal. Implantation and removal of iris retractor performed with injector.

Results:

In clinical research 107 cataract phacoemulsifications were performed through 2,2-2,5 mm incisions. In all cases the pupil dilatation was done with a new iris retractors. The indication to use it in a case of a small pupil or intraoperative iris prolapse.

Conclusions:

Technique of implantation and removal of iris retractor through the injector is simple for the surgeon, is safe to use and reduces iris injury.
