ESCRS study on antibiotic prophylaxis of endophthalmitis yields positive result
Peter Barry, FRCSI, FRCOphth

THE European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons have halted
recruitment to their two year clinical trial of antibiotic prophlyaxis
of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery. The study has found that the risk of contracting endophthalmitis following phacoemulsification cataract surgery is significantly reduced by an intracameral injection of cefuroxime at the end of the surgery.

The news (reported on this page) that the ESCRS has halted recruitment on the antibiotic prophylaxis of endophthalmitis study because of a beneficial result is a landmark event in the history of the ESCRS.This study proves that the injection of intracameral cefuroxime after cataract surgery reduces by five fold the occurrence of this rare but often devastating complication....

MICS- The Future of cataract surgery?
Jorge Alio MD speaks with EuroTimes in a newsmaker interview about the current state of the art of microincision cataract surgery
I Howard Fine provides his insight into the potential
advantages of bimanual MICS
Numerous centres reporting favourable results with bimanual
MICS and implantation of new microincision IOLS
New irrigating choppers may increase the ease and safety of
MICS procedures
Proponents of coaxial ultra-small incision maintain that phaco
provides many advantages of MICS without the learning curve
A range of new phaco sleeves have increased the ease and
safety of coaxial ultra-small incisions techniques
Several manufacturers are responding to the need for IOLS
implantable through unenlarged micro- and ultra-small incisions

Refractive
A report on ESCRS symposium on the latest surgical innovations
in the treatment of presbyopia
Good visual outcomes reported with ICL but capsular opacities
still a problem
Epi-LASIK achieves good results in enhancement of previous
surface ablation
Two studies indicate that Epi- LASIK provides good visual
function with little haze
Abnormal post-LASIK epithelial sloughing a possible indication of epithelial basement membrane dystrophy
Eyes with Avellino corneal dystrophy aggravated by LASIK
achieve good visual outcome following LASIK flap removal and
application of conjunctival flap
New two-step multifocal LASIK ablation technique provides
patients with good distance and moderate reading vision
Variable results reported with femtosecond laser when
compared with mechanical microkeratomes
High keratometry reading a predictor of poor visual
outcome in keratoconic eyes implanted with intracorneal ring segments
Implantation of ring segments in steep axis provides greater
reduction of irregular astigmatism in keratoconus patients

Ocular Update
Patients with non-functioning visual cortex can distinguish
colour and orientation through separate unconscious visual
pathway
Survey finds European ophthalmologists under pressure
to increase patient through-put
Ophthalmologists need to be aware of differing
epidemiologies of eye diseases in men and women
