ESCRS EUROTIMES
APRIL EDITION 2006

 From the Editors
Jose L Güell, FRCS FRCOphth

The ESCRS membership’s interest in corneal and ocular surface surgery and diseases seems to be increasing. This is true not only for those (such as myself) whose main practice is cornea, but also for most of our members - experts in other fields of
refractive and/or anterior segment surgery.

 Update on Keratoplasty
Four of Europe’s leading keratoplasty surgeons discuss their experiences with current penetrating and nonpenetrating corneal transplant procedures
Intrastromal rings may prevent vascularisation of transplanted
corneas
Deep lamellar endothelial keratoplasty a promising option in eyes with compromised
endothelia
Fibrin glue a useful adjunct to deep endothelial keratoplasty and procedures to treat
conjunctivochalasis
Femtosecond laser may improve accuracy in matching donor cornea button size to recipient’s cornea
Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty gaining acceptance as an alternative
to penetrating techniques
Small incision deep lamellar endothelial keratoplasty technique
shows promise
Graft rejection can be avoided through additional pharmacological and surgical means in at-risk patients
New keratoprostheses may broaden indications for the implants
Keratoplasty and other alternatives to treatment of idiopathic and post-LASIK
ectasia discussed at ESCRS symposium in Lisbon
Two studies indicate slightly better visual outcome after penetrating keratoplasty
compared with deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty

 Cataract and refractive
Trials support findings of ESCRS endophthalmitis study regarding
prophylactic efficacy of intracameral cefuroxime
Accommodating IOL continues to provide good near and distance vision at three years’ follow-up
Two new multifocal IOLs provide patients with good visual function for near and distance
High proportion of patients implanted with apodised multifocal achieve spectacle
independence
New technologies help define subclinical keratoconus
Better visual outcomes and less induction of aberrations
following customised ablations
Dutch ophthalmic surgeons now permitted to implant multifocal IOLs in public cataract patients
