Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze the effect of simultaneous intravitreal application of aflibercept and phacoemulsification on diabetic macular edema (DME) in patients with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy.

Setting:

The study was performed at Special hospital for ophthalmology - Clinic Maja, Nis, Serbia.

Methods:

The study included 21 patients with DME who underwent combined phacoemulsification and intravitreal application of aflibercept 2mg. The control group consisted of 21 patients with DME who underwent phacoemulsification and they were given NSAID. Medical check-ups were performed 7 days, 1 month, and 3 months after surgery.

Results:

In the group of patients who received aflibercept there was evidence of significant functional and anatomical improvement. Preoperative central foveal thickness was 483+-105.23; at postoperative day 7 it was 276+-125.14; and after 3 months 305+-133.42. Preoperative BCVA was 0.14 +/- 0.25 and at postoperative day 7 it was 0.78 +/- 0.88 which was maintained for three months postoperatively.

Conclusions:

Combined phacoemulsification and intravitreal application of aflibercept is a safe treatment option in patients with diabetic macular edema and cataract.
