Abstract Details

The aim of this study is to evaluate 3 months effect of silicone hydrogel contact lens wear on conjunctival goblet cell morphology by using impression cytology.

Department of Ophthalmology, Bulent Ecevit University Faculty of Medicine

Thirty-six patients who wear Senofilcon A silicone hydrogel contact lenses for the first time were included in this study. Conjunctival specimens were obtained from superior palpebral conjunctiva before contact lens wear and after 3 months of contact lens wear. The specimens were graded by classification of Nelson.

The mean age of the patients were 27.5±3.2 (between 22-36 years) years old. The gender distribution was 16 male and 20 female. Goblet cell density was found 82±125 cells/mm 2 after three months of contact lens wear. There were statistically significant differences in impression cytology assessment between before and 3 months after contact lens wear (P<0.05). No statistically significant difference was observed in conjunctival epithelial changes before and after three months of contact lens wear (p <0.05)

Three months of silicone hydrogel contact lens wear reduced conjunctival goblet cells. No conjunctival epithelial changes were found in the grading of conjunctival epithelial cells.
