Abstract Details

To investigate the rate of central corneal thickness (CCT) increase of porcine eyes after the death of the animal. The estimation of time of death through extrapolation of measured data

1- Ophthalmo-Check Eye Center, Athens 2- Lab of Experimental Ophthalmology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

CCT of 10 freshly slaughtered pig eyes was measured in frequent intervals for 9 hours (3 to 4 hours – 12 hours postmortem) with a hand held ultrasonic pachymeter under constant humidity and temperature conditions. The difference in CCT change and the rate of corneal thickness increase were calculated.

The average increase of CCT after 12 hours was 315 μm. The average rate of post-mortem CCT change was 35μm / hour. The change showed a strong linear correlation between CCT and time.

CCT in post mortem pig eyes shows a linear increase in the first 12 hours after death. Through extrapolation of data, the estimation of the death of the animal may be possible, Application of this hypothesis in humans may provide forensics an additional method to calculate the time of death.
