Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the correlation between the subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) measured by swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) and retrobulbar blood flow measured by color Doppler imaging (CDI) in normal individuals.

Setting:

A prospective clinical study was performed at the Department of Ophthalmology of the Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Kaunas Clinics.

Methods:

Healthy individuals underwent the SFCT evaluation using 1050 nm DRI Triton SS-OCT (Topcon, Tokyo, Japan). The SFCT measurements were obtained manually using callipers perpendicularly from the outer part of the hyper-reflective line (retinal pigment epithelial layer) to the line corresponding to the choroidal-scleral junction. Measurements were performed at the same time 1-2 PM. Retrobulbar hemodynamic parameters were examined by CDI (Mindray, Shenzhen, China). The peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV) and resistive index (RI) in the ophthalmic artery (OA), central retinal artery (CRA), temporal posterior ciliary arteries (TPCA) were measured.

Results:

60 eyes of 30 patiens were examined (mean age 58.87±5.14, range 50-67 years). Mean SFCT was 231.35±66.79 µm. Mean PSV of OA was 35.39±8.67 cm/s, CRA – 12.63±2.81 cm/s, PCA – 19.64±3.59 cm/s. Mean EDV of OA – 9.06±2.85 cm/s, CRA – 3.84±0.95 cm/s, TPCA – 7.73±1.78 cm/s. Mean RI of OA was 0.74±0.06, CRA – 0.69±0.07, PCA – 0.60±0.07. There was no statistically significant correlation between SFCT and PSV, EDV and RI of any arteries included in the study.

Conclusions:

No correlations were observed between SFCT and retrobulbar hemodynamic parameters in our study. Further investigations should be continued to confirm and better clarify our findings.
