Abstract Details

To report a case of a rapidly growing conjunctival tumor in a 65 year old Hispanic female

University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, USA

Chart review

A 65 year old female presented to us with a 10x10x5mm right conjunctival mass. Incisional biopsy was done at that visit. Two weeks later, the mass nearly doubled in size. Workup revealed no intraocular or orbital extension. One day later, the biopsy results revealed conjunctival malignant melanoma. Surgical excision with wide margins, cryotherapy to the margins and absolute alcohol application was performed then. Postoperatively, treatment with Mitomycin C drops was initiated. Systemic work up did not reveal any metastasis. No evidence of recurrence is seen 1 year after surgery.

Conjunctival malignant melanomas can grow at a very rapid rate. Surgical excision with wide margins, cryotherapy and absolute alcohol application as well as postoperative use of Mitomycin C drops are necessary to prevent recurrence.
