Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare a newly proposed surgical technique for manipulating the edge of the lenticule in ReLEX SMILE; the “push-up & push-dwon” technique, to the conventional technique, in terms of intraoperative complications.

Setting:

Ebsar eye center, Benha, Qalyopia, Egypt

Methods:

A prospective randomized comparative study were done. Two groups of patients were operated upon; the conventional technique group and the “push-up & push-dwon” technique group. The intraoperative complications and mean duration of the ReLEX smile operations of the both groups were compared.

Results:

The conventional and the “push-up” groups comprised 94 and 142 eyes respectively. Operative mean duration for both groups were 13.76±3.71 and 4.45±1.45 minutes respectively (p<0.0001). Complications related to the technique used included, Incision tear occurred in a total of 21 eyes (18 eyes in the conventional group and 3 eyes in the “push-up” group), Lenticule adherence to the cap occurred in 2 eyes (2 eyes in the conventional group and none in the “push-up” group). The incidence of intraoperative complications for the conventional and the “push-up” groups was 23.40% and 2.11% respectively (p<0.0001)

Conclusions:

The newly proposed “push-up” technique seems to facilitate visualization of the edge of the lenticule in ReLEX SMILE, resulting in shorter mean operative duration and less intraoperative complications than the conventional technique.
