Bilateral implantation of a hydrophobic trifocal C-loop intraocular lens (AcrySof IQ PanOptix®): refractive outcomes

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the safety and efficacy of refractive lens exchange with bilateral implantation of the AcrySof IQ PanOptix® (Alcon Laboratories, USA) trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) for presbyopia correction.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department, Hospital CUF Porto

Methods:

Prospective, non-randomized clinical trial, which included 40 patients submitted to refractive bilateral lens exchange with AcrySof IQ PanOptix® IOL implantation. The minimum follow-up was 6 months with the following outcome measures: monocular and binocular, corrected and uncorrected distance, intermediate (70 cm) and near (40 cm) visual acuities, manifest refraction, binocular defocus curve and contrast sensitivity. All procedures were performed with manual phacoemulsification, with corneal incisions placed on the steepest corneal meridian. A preloaded capsular tension ring was implanted in all cases. IOL power was calculated using partial coherence laser interferometry (Zeiss IOL Master®, Germany).

Results:

A total of 80 eyes of 40 patients included and followed for 6 months. The mean preoperative axial length was 23,44 ± 1,17 mm (range from 22,75 to 26,13 mm) and the mean pre-operative keratometric cylinder was 0,51 ± 0,31 D. Postoperatively 88% of the eyes were within ± 0,50 D and the mean postoperative residual sphere was -0,02 ± 0,29 D and the refractive cylinder was -0,47 ± 0,41 D. The postoperative distance, intermediate and near uncorrected monocular visual acuities were 0.96, 0.96 and 0,84 respectively. Binocular defocus curve showed a visual acuity ≥ 0,8 in all tested distances.

Conclusions:

The AcrySof IQ PanOptix® is a safe and effective solution for presbyopia correction, offering superior distance, intermediate and near visual performances.
