Abstract Details

Purpose:

Attendee will learn the importance of the antiblockage technique using the ultrachopper and other maneuvers in dealing with posterior polar cataracts with soft or hard nuclei.

Setting:

Clínica Oftalmológica del Caribe , Barranquilla , Colombia

Methods:

It has been demostrated by Vasavada et al and other studies that during hydrodissection the intraocular pressure raises the most. This technique helps to preserve the integrity of the posterior capsule in these challenging cases. In our training experience we use the Kitaro simulator system for the trainee in order to develop mental representations. Then in the patient, after doing the capsulorexhis, the surgeon makes a groove in the center of the nucleus with the ultrachopper and then split the two halves. Then we proceed to hydrodissection and the fluid runs through this space providing a better control of the posterior capsule integrity. Then we proceed with the maneuvers accordingly if it is a soft or hard posterior polar cataract.

Results:

In our experience, we have seen that our trainees can manage in a simple, safe, reproducible and effective procedure these cases. Also, since we are using this technique, the rate of posterior capsular rupture has decreased.

Conclusions:

In our training experience we have seen that this technique that is available with the ultrachopper has been very helpful for the beginner as well as for the experienced surgeon in dealing with posterior polar cataracts FINANCIAL INTEREST: One of more of the authors... receives consulting fees, retainer, or contract payments from a company producing, developing or supplying the product or procedure presented, One of more of the authors... travel has been funded, fully or partially, by a competing company
