Abstract Details

To evaluate surgical technique, postoperative visual acuity, IOL stability and posterior capsule opacification (PCO).

Research Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO), Cairo, EGYPT.

Twenty two eyes of 13 patients were included. Nine had bilateral astigmatism with cataract, and 4 were unilateral. Eight were males and 5 females. Ages ranged from 32 to 70 years ( mean 54.5 years). Corneal astigmatism ranged from 1.5 to 4.0 D (mean, 2.25). Three eyes had forme fruste Keratoconus, 3 were post keratoplasty, 2 eyes post LASIK and 4 eyes post radial keratotomy (RK). Follow up period was 12 months.

Phacoemulsification with toric hydrophobic acrylic IOL implantation was done as planned, to all eyes. Postoperative visual acuity ranged from 6/18 to 6/6. IOLs remained in place with no any displacement. PCO was noticed in 2 eyes (9%) after 8 and 11 months. Significant improved uncorrected visual acuity and patient satisfaction were noticed.

Efficient surgery with accurate IOL alignment caused high quality vision and patient satisfaction with spectacle independence in expanding indications. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
