Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the safety, efficacy and clinical outcomes of femtosecond laser small incision lenticule extraction SMILE to correct astigmatism.

Setting:

Alpha vision center, Zagazig, Egypt.

Methods:

Comparative, consecutive, randomized, prospective trial.Patients with astigmatism ( range from -0.75 to -6.00 diopters [D]), a corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) of 20/20 or better, divided randomly into two groups. One group had LASIK with ALLEGRETTO, WAFELIGHT, the other had SMILE using VISUMAX, ZEISS. Study parameters included uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), CDVA, manifest refraction, astigmatism.

Results:

The study included 36 eyes (26 patients). At 3 months, 94.4% of eyes had a UDVA of 20/20 or better and 97.2% had 20/32 or better; 94.4% of eyes were within ±0.50 D of the intended correction and 97.2% were within ±1.00 D; 94.4% of eyes had no residual cylinder. All eyes had a postoperative CDVA of 20/20 or better.

Conclusions:

Small incision lenticule extraction SMILE was safe, effective, and predictable. No specific clinical side effects. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
