Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the biometry prediction errors (BPEs) in refractive lens exchange (RLE) surgery, related to gender and IOL calculation formula.

Setting:

Private surgical unit.

Methods:

The refractive outcomes, keratometry values, axial lengths and anterior chamber depths from 1056 eyes of 528 RLE cases were analyzed. Haigis' IOL calculation formula was used in alla cases. The BPEs were assessed from the planned and achieved refractive outcomes, and were calculated from preoperative SRK/T data.

Results:

The absolute BPE was lower with the Haigis' than with the SRK/T formula (0.16±0.26 vs. 0.32±0.30D, p<0.001). In accordance with in cataract surgery, the SRK/T formula rendered a gender difference in BPE, with a more hyperopic outcome in men (+0.16±0.39 D vs. -0.06±0.47D; p<0.001). This difference was found to be associated with a flatter cornea, longer axial length and deeper anterior chamber.

Conclusions:

The precision of the refractive outcome was better with the Haigis' than with the SRK/T formula in this RLE material with a large span of preoperative refractions. The differences in outcome between the two formulas owe to differences in ocular dimensions, and render a gender difference in refractive outcome. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
