Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the refractive outcomes and the distance, intermediate and near visual acuity achieved by patients implanted with a polyfocal bioanalogic intraocular lens after cataract surgery

Setting:

Asian Eye Institute, Philippines

Methods:

This is a prospective study of patients who underwent femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and implantation of a polyfocal bioanalogic IOL in both eyes. Patients 40 years and above with bilateral cataracts were recruited to join the study. The polyfocal bioanalogic IOL is a new concept which resembles the natural crystalline lens by the material and optical design. Outcomes measures were refractive results and monocular and binocular distance, intermediate and near vision.

Results:

8 out of 10 patients (16 eyes) have reached one month follow up. At one month, the mean sphere was +0.52D, mean cylinder was -0.59D and mean spherical equivalent was +0.22D. Monocularly, 68%of eyes had UDVA of 20/25 or better, 94% had UIVA of 20/25 or better and 82% had UNVA of J3 or better. Binocularly, 100% of eyes had UDVA of 20/25 or better, 100% had UIVA of 20/25 or better and 88% had UNVA of J3 or better.

Conclusions:

Study results at one month showed that refractive outcomes achieved were near emmetropia and monocular and binocular uncorrected distance, intermediate and near vision were very good.
