Abstract Details

Purpose:

To find the dependence of corneal flap thickness on patient's initial karatopachymetric values

Setting:

The S.N. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution, Volgograd branch

Methods:

results of 130 LASIK surgeries (65 patients) performed on excimer laser Schwind Amaris (Schwind Inc., Germany) equipped with function of on-line pachymetry were brought to analysis. The right eye was treated first in all the cases. Corneal thickness was measured prior to flap creation and prior to ablation. Corneal flap thickness was calculated as a difference between these two measurements.

Results:

mean value of corneal thickness prior to flap creation averaged 538, 74 µm (from 459 to 631 µm). Average corneal flap thickness equaled 103 µm (mean value for the right eye - 106,5 µm (from 75 to 136 µm); for the left eye - 99,4 µm (from 73 to 131 µm). There is a reliable direct correlation dependence (p=0,0001) between the baseline keratopachymetry and the achieved corneal flap thickness. Correlation coefficient (r) equals 0,33. This dependence can be expressed by the formulae: y=39,5+0,12*x, where x - central corneal thickness, y - corneal flap thickness.

Conclusions:

thickness of the created corneal flap is directly-proportional to the preoperative corneal thickness. The greater is the initial corneal thickness value, the thicker is the created corneal flap. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
