Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the management of the intraocular lens (IOL) damages after implantation with injector system

Setting:

Ondokuz Mayis University

Methods:

We retrospectively evaluated the charts of 25 eyes of 25 patients who underwent cataract surgery with an IOL complication such as IOL cracks, tearing of a haptic, bending of a haptic. Three different types of acrylic IOL were used in all cases are Sensar/AMO (acrylic, n:8), Acryfold/Appasamy (n:2), and Acriva/VSY (n:15).

Results:

Only one IOL optic crack and 14 IOLs with tear of haptics were seen in Acriva IOL. Two of Sensar IOLs were bended and the breaking off the haptics were seen in remaining 6 Sensar IOLs . Two Acryfold IOLs had rupture of haptics. In the management, six IOLs were left in the eye and remaining 19 IOLs were replaced with a new one. Of the non-replaced six IOLs, three IOLs were rotated as the intact haptic could be located at the 6-o'clock position, two IOLs with no maneuver and one of them was sutured to sclera. Decentralization was seen only in one case.

Conclusions:

Although the most preferred approach for the damaged IOLs was replacement with a new one, leaving the haptic-damaged IOLs in the eye as rotating the intact haptic at the 6-o'clock position could be an alternative method FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
