Abstract Details

Purpose:

To observe morphologic changes of meibomian glands in patients with keratoconus.

Setting:

Procpective controlled study.

Methods:

In this study 48 eye of 48 patients and 27 eyes of healthy volunteers as controls were included. All subject underwent slit-lamp examinations, break up time(BUT),Schirmer test and meibomiography. The upper eyelids were everted, and the meibomian glands were observed using a non-contact meibography system (Sirius CSO, Italy). Partial or complete meibomian gland loss was scored using the following degree for each eyelid: degree 0 (no meibomian gland loss), degree 1 (area of meibomian gland loss≤25%), degree 2 (area of meibomian gland loss between 26%-50%) , degree 3(area of meibomian gland loss between 51%-75%),and degree 4(area of meibomian gland loss ≥75%) .

Results:

There was no significantly difference sex,age and Schirmer test between the two groups. The frequency of meibomian gland loss was significantly greather in patients with keratoconus than that in controls. The mean ratio of the meibomian gland area loss in keratoconus and control eyes were 47±12,11 and 27±2.11, respectively. The frequency of meibomian gland loss was significantly greather in patients with keratoconus than that in controls(p≥0.05).

Conclusions:

Keratoconus is associated with meibomian gland loss. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
