Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of the study was to evaluate the utilization of NIDEK Autorefractokeratometer (NIDEK ARK -1 ),(using mire ring measurement), as a tool for selection of cataract patients for Toric Intraocular lenses(IOL) by assessing keratometric measurement agreement with IOL MASTER (Zeiss) (partial coherence interferometer) , and NIDEK OPD SCAN - III ,(placido based measurement) .

Setting:

Drishti Eye Care And Research Centre ,Patna .Bihar, India .

Methods:

In this prospective study, Keratometric readings of 146 eyes of cataract patients with corneal astigmatism more than 0.75D, obtained from NIDEK ARK-1 , were compared with keratometric readings from IOL MASTER and NIDEK OPD SCAN III, and the results were computed .Comparisons were made using paired- t test .

Results:

Mean of average keratometric values obtained from NIDEK ARK-1 ,IOL MASTER and NIDEK OPD SCAN III were 44.19 ±2.24 ; 43.92 ± 2.22; 43.79 ± 1.97 respectively . Mean difference in average keratometry between the instruments were 0.264 ± 1.354 for NIDEK ARK-1 & IOL MASTER ( p=0.0197 ) and 0.40 ± 1.33 for NIDEK ARK-1 & NIDEK OPD SCAN ( p=0.004 ), which was statistically significant .However mean difference of corneal astigmatism were 0.35 ± 2.56 for NIDEK ARK-1 & IOL MASTER ( p = 0.098 ) & 0.03 ± 2.76 for NIDEK ARK-1 & NIDEK OPD SCAN (p= 0.89 ) which was not statistically significant .

Conclusions:

Proper patient selection in the Premium IOL Segment such as Toric IOL requires accurate keratometry . All the three instruments provided comparable estimation of corneal astigmatism and hence NIDEK ARK-1 measurements could prove to be a useful screening tool for selection of patients for Toric IOL .
