Abstract Details

Purpose:

We want to investigate if imaging the capsular bag by optical coherence tomography ( OCT ) ,in pseudophakic patients with suspected Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO ) ,may help in selecting cases to address to the procedure of Yag Laser Capsulotomy .

Setting:

Casa di Cura Villa Donatello, Firenze, Italy

Methods:

We compare the amount of acquired lines of visual acuity (ETDRS chart ) in 2 groups of pseudophakic eyes of patients treated by Yag Laser Capsulotomy for posterior capsule opacification (PCO). In the first group ,control group, the selection of cases was only based on routine clinical findings ( referred good recover of vision after cataract extraction ,subsequent loss of vision ,PCO diagnosed by slit lamp examination ,normal fundus findings). In the second group the selection was based on the same clinical findings and OCT imaging of the capsular bag.

Results:

8 cases were included in the control group ; 9 cases were included in the group studied by OCT of the capsular bag . The mean change in visual acuity was 2 lines in the control group, 4 lines in the group studied by OCT

Conclusions:

OCT imaging of the capsular bag is useful in selecting cases of PCO requiring Yag Laser capsulotomy.OCT imaging of the capsular bag is useful in selecting cases of PCO requiring Yag Laser capsulotomWhen a patient having received an uncomplicated cataract intervention complains for secondarily reduced visual acuity OCT may be useful in showing anatomical details of the capsular bag.
