Dynamics of local levels of cytokines in patients with corneal ectasias after UV cross-linking

Purpose:

To study the dynamics of cytokine levels in tears of patients with tear corneal ectasis after UV cross-linking.

Setting:

Ufa Eye Research Institute, Ufa, Russia

Methods:

We examined 24 patients (15 men, 9 women) with keratectasis, average age 30,3±2,5 years. 11 control healthy individuals. CCL was performed according to standard procedures Epi-off, Riboflavin + UVA irradiation 15 min, 370 nm, 3 mW / cm ². Observation periods were 3, 7 and 14 days after the CCL. In tears TNF-α, IL-1β and IF-α were determined by ELISA 450 nm wavelength.

Results:

No differences in the levels of cytokines, depending on the sex of the patients have been identified. In patients with keratectasis was a significant increase in the local concentration of TNF-α and IF-α at a normal level of IL-1β. On day 3 after CCL is registered the transient increase in content of IF-α, IL-1β in tear. Changes in levels of cytokines may be associated with immunological response to deepithelialization and UV irradiation of the cornea.

Conclusions:

In patients with keratectasis was detected the elevation of TNF-α and IF-α in tears. Corneal cross-linking contributes to momentarily increase in local levels of IL-1β and IF-α, causing no significant inflammatory response. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
