Abstract Details

To assess the safety and outcomes of a novel surgical technique for double pterygium. Double pterygium is not only more aggressive but also shows an increased prevalence in the peri-equatorial developing world. There is a need to develop a technique which is easy to perform and with minimal complication rate.

A prospective study of 21 consecutive surgeries for double pterygium performed at a rural eye hospital is described

The twin heads including tenons fascia were dissected free, involved in a single pre-placed suture, transposed and tied together in close apposition after sliding under a specially formed inferior conjunctival hood.

Mean follow-up of 16.6±7.4 months to note for recurrence, aesthetic outcome and complications. Recurrence noted in 3 eyes (14.2%), loose knot tie in one eye (4.76%). 15 patients (71.4%) were satisfied with aesthetic outcome

The novel surgical technique appears safe and effective in treatment of double pterygium besides providing comparable results to other current methods. The low cost curtailing the use of amniotic membrane graft and fibrin glue was an added boon in the developing world. The low recurrence rate, low complication rate and satisfactory cosmesis are an added plus. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
