Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effect of the Achievement RGP® lens (Aspheric RGP of special eccentricity type) fitting in patients with keratoconus.

Setting:

Prospectively patients with clinically evident or suspected keratoconus who were fitted with Achievement® RGP lens in Kim's Eye Hospital were evaluated for 1 year.

Methods:

Prospectively 20 patients (37eyes) with clinically evident or suspected keratoconus who were fitted with Achievement® RGP lens in Kim's Eye Hospital were evaluated. Patients were diagnosed by manifest refraction, autokeratometry, ORBscan in our hospital at the first time. Achievement® lens, aspheric RGP lens of special eccentricity type, is designed with a patented junctionless back surface and a controlled edge lift from Art Optical Contact Lens, Inc. For lens fitting, we tried the aspheric lens with various eccentricities(0.65, 0.8, 1.0). Each patient was examined at the time of diagnosis, fitting and after having used the Achievement® RGP lens. At each visit, complete ophthalmologic examination including manifest refraction, Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), slit-lamp biomicroscopy and corneal topography (ORB scan) analysis was done.

Results:

The mean age was 27.5 ± 8.27 years. Prior to Achievement® RGP lens fitting mean (±SD) subjective refraction spherical equivalent (SRSE), subjective refraction astigmatism (SRAST) and BCVA (logMAR) were - 4.95 ± 3.40D, 1.86 ± 2.16D and 0.27 ± 0.36, respectively. Following the use of the Achievement® RGP lens, there were statistically significant improvement in mean values of SRSE (p=0.001), SRAST (p=0.018) and BCVA (logMAR) (p<0.001).

Conclusions:

The use of Achievement® RGP lens significantly improve best corrected visual acuity and keratometry values. We consider that Achievement® RGP lens was an effective treatment correcting myopia and astigmatism in keratoconus patients FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
