Practice pattern of ophthalmologists in southern Nigeria

Abstract Details



Purpose:

T o determine the practice pattern and preferences of Ophthalmologists in South of Nigeria.

Setting:

Mulit centre Secondary and Tetiary care settings.

Methods:

This was a descriptive cross sectional study.A questionnaire comprising 27 multiple choice style questions were sent out to all ophthalmic practitioners in the region .

Results:

81% of respondents preferred the extracapsular cataract surgery whilst 16% perform small incision cataract surgery (SICS) and 3% performed phacoemulsification . 70% performed biometry on all patients. With regard to anaesthesia, 49% performed peribulbar anaesthesia and 36%, performed retrobulbar anaesthesia.Half of respondents perform paediatric cataract surgery .Visual correction in paediatric was was mostly with spectacles in 72% of respondents. Half of respondents have access to optical coherent tomograph (OCT) and also perform intravitreal therapy.

Conclusions:

There is a gradual evolution in the trend of cataract management , however there remains a difference in comparison with colleagues in other parts of the world. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
