Abstract Details

To evaluate the long-term corneal endothelial changes following phacoemulsification in cataract with coexistent Fuchs corneal dystrophy.

Tertiary care eye hospital in eastern India

112 cases with Fuchs dystrophy and cataract undergoing phacoemulsification between 2010 and 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Endothelial cell density, polymegethism, pleomorphism, and pachymetry were measured and the rates of endothelial cell and pachymetry change were analyzed along with visual outcome and progression to corneal transplantation.

Only pachymetric data tended to increase with statistical significance (p = 0.001) with a mean follow-up period of 24 months. The mean rates of annual endothelial cell loss was 16% while alteration of CV was 13%. Visual acuity was maintained at 20/40 in 85.7% of cases. 4 cases underwent corneal transplantation during this period.

Careful and skillful phacoemulsification in cataract with Fuchs dystrophy can delay corneal transplantation in this group of patients with maintenance of adequate visual acuity. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
