Correction of astigmatism with toric IOLs, tips and tricks for preoperative marking, implantation and postoperative follow-up in cataract patients

Purpose:

Evaluation of Acrysof toric IOLs as a method for correction of astigmatism in cataract patients

Setting:

Zagazig University Hospital , Egypt

Methods:

The study was a prospective one , including 30 eyes of 30 cataract patients with astigmatism from 1 - 4 diopters , preoperative evaluation was performed by full ophthalmic examination , keratometry , corneal topography , online toric IOL calculation was performed . The preoperative marking and surgery was performed by the same surgeon , postoperative follow up to 3 months was performed to evaluate the degree of astigmatism , data was analyzed

Results:

The study showed that mean age of the 30 patients was 64.8 years , after 3 months follow up the mean postoperative astigmatism was 1.25 +-0.25 comparing to the preoperative mean 2.36+-0.7 . The mean of Postoperative uncorrected visual acuity was 0.9+-0.13 comparing to the preoperative mean 0.1+-0.15. The mean IOL rotation was 3.6 degrees in the last follow up.

Conclusions:

Toric IOLs are effective and safe method for correction of the preoperative astigmatism in cataract patients . The study provided the best and easiest methods to plan , perform , align and follow up the toric IOL cases. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
