Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the duration of two different techniques, pulsed vacuum (Cataplse Lens Removal System, Med-Logics, Athens, TX. USA) and phacoemulsification using the Infinity Vision System (Alcon, Fort Worth, TX. USA), in the removal of nuclear and peri-nuclear material, in femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery.

Setting:

Mendez Vision Institute, Tijuana, Baja California. Mexico.

Methods:

20 videos of non complicated femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery were randomly selected. 10 cases the Infinity Vision System was used and 10 cases the Catapulse Lens Removal System was used. During playback of the video we timed from the entrance of the tip of the hand piece to its exit. Then compared.

Results:

The average time using the Infinity Vision System was 2:14 minutes (SD 1:01 min). Using the Catapulse Lens Removal System the average time was 2:46 minutes (SD 0:54 min).

Conclusions:

No statistical difference was found in the amount of time it takes to remove the nuclear and peri-nuclear mater with both systems.
