Abstract Details

To detect the risk of progression of diabetic macular oedema and diabetic retinopathy after phacoemulsification and to identify factors related with poor visual outcome.

Magrabi Eye Hospital

Retrospective case series study. Clinical charts of diabetic patients who undergone uneventful phacoemulsification with posterior chamber IOL implantation with a minimum follow up of 6 months were included. Preoperative visual acuity, level of retinopathy and macular oedema were recorded. Incidence of progression of macular oedema, retinopathy, visual acuity improvement and related complications were studied. Analysis was performed to detect factors related to poor outcomes.

Fourty patients were included in the study. Twenty three patients (57,5%) obtained a better vision than 20/40. Thirteen patients (32,5%) had a final vision less than 20/200. Nine patients (22,5%) developed or worsened macular oedema postoperatively. Thirteen patients (32,5%) showed progression of diabetic retinopathy. The presence of preoperative macular oedema and bad glycemic control were associated with poor visual outcome

Phacoemulsification could accelerate diabetic retinopathy and macular oedema progression. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
