Abstract Details

Purpose:

To restore spectacle free vision in a patient aged 81, with multiple coronary by-pass surgeries, at his desire, 15 years after bilateral intracapsular cataract extraction and 5 years after retinal detachment surgery in the left eye.

Setting:

The Ophthalmology theatre of Polisano Hospital, Sibiu

Methods:

We assesed the case at the slit lamp, we performed funduscopy, endothelial cell count, and biometry using the IOL Master and US A-scan. We implanted the IOL at two weeks difference, first in the left eye, with much care due to previous pathology trying to protect the corneal endothelium.

Results:

BCVA with hyperopic correction (+12D) was 20/25 in OD and 20/60 in OS. After surgery UVA was 20/25 in OD and 20/30 in OS, intraocular pressure was within normal limits, retina shows no damage and the endothelial cell count was very little modified at six months.

Conclusions:

Artisan Aphakia lens placed underneath the iris is a safe method to restore vision in difficult cases without further damage to the retina, sparing the corneal endothelium with outcomes that are stable in time (9 months follow-up). FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
