Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe the results of patients undergoind femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery in our Institution.

Setting:

Asociación para Evitar la Ceguera en México, IAP.

Methods:

Prospective study of 335 cases between march and august 2013. Demographic characteristics, comorbilities, surgeon experience, complications, use of sutures, cornea on the first day after surgery and anterior chamber cells were taken into account and analyzed.

Results:

14 cases presented with posterior capsule rupture, non of them related to the use of femtosecond laser, 59% required suture in main incision, 35% had corneal stroma oedema, 4.47% presented with periincisional edema, 54% had transparent cornea on the first day after surgery. + Cells were noted on 66% of cases, whilst 97% of patients had a centered IOL and 88% of patients had normal intraocular pressure.

Conclusions:

Femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery has a big potential to obtain more precision in the final surgical results. More long term studies are required to evaluate cost-benefit of this technique versus manual technique and to confirm its superiority. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
