Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare cataract and intraocular refractive surgery outcomes following the use of an intraoperative digital image guidance system to outcomes without the use of such a system.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Germany

Methods:

In this prospective, single-centre study intraoperative usability of a digital image guidance system (Verion, Alcon Inc.) as well as refractive outcomes following intraocular lens (IOL) surgery with premium lens (mono- and multifocal toric, phakic toric) implantation were evaluated. Data was compared to a matched group of patients with similar intraocular lens implantation but without intraoperative image guidance.

Results:

Preoperative captured digital images of the anterior segment including details of scleral vessels and iris structures need to be of good quality in order to use them for intraoperative lens alignment as well as positioning of the corneal incisions. Three months postoperatively, functional results are evaluated and compared to those of a matched group following preoperative manual marking of the cornea in an upright position.

Conclusions:

Digital image guidance during intraocular lens implantation can facilitate premium IOL implantation and offers the advantage to individualise treatments.
