Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the intraoperative performance and postoperative outcome comparison of two phaco tips in the same phacoemulsification machine.

Setting:

TOBB ETU Hospital Ankara,Turkey

Methods:

This chart and video review comprised consecutive 60 eligible patients who had phacoemulsification using an Infiniti-Ozil-IP (torsional) machine, and using either 45 miniflared (in 30) eyes or 45 balanced tip (in 30). IOP preoperatively and postoperatively. Pachymetri at the wound site pre and post op day 7. The intraoperative mean phaco power. Ultrasound (US) time, CDE, Wound-site thermal injury. The correlation between the CDE and percentage of change in IOP. Chatter and followability were recorded. Post-op day 1 visual acuities evaluated

Results:

The review included 60 patients. Baseline characteristics in the two groups were similar. There were no significant intraoperative complications. The balanced tip averaged less ultrasound (US) time, CDE. No wound site thermal injury was observed. Pachymetry at the wound site was slightly comparable. The balanced tip had less chatter and better followability. No significance in the correlation between the CDE and percentage of change in IOP. Post-op day 1 visual acuities were slightly better with the balanced tip.

Conclusions:

Both phaco tips were effective with no significant intraoperative complications. The Balanced tip outperformed the miniflared phaco tip, with a lower mean needle time, less chatter, and improved followability. This corresponded to better clinical outcomes.
