Contact lens management of pediatric aphakia

To evaluate the performance of contact lenses in pediatric eyes with aphakia

We retrospectively studied 18 aphakic infants (20 eyes) and 1 aphakic child (1 eye) who were fitted with silicon rubber lenses (Silsoft lenses, Elastofilcon A, Bausch&Lomb). All patients were given spectacles to use in case of contact lens related complications or loss of the lenses. And the spectacles were also used to correct the residual ametropia for both eyes. The patients were patched to control amblyopia according to their ages. And their parents were suggested to follow their children's behaviors, which are related to the vision, during the patching.


Posterior hyperplastic primery vitreus (PHPV) was the pre-existing pathology in 10 eyes. The other most frequently reasons for aphakia were congenital cataract (CC), retrolental fibroplasia (ROP) and trauma respectively. Contact lenses were fitted between 1 week and 1 month following surgical intervention. The most frequently used base curve of contact lens was 7,5 mm and it's diameter was 11,3 mm. The lenses were removed to cleaned up weekly and were replaced every 3 months by a new one to reach best corrected visual acuity . Satisfactory fitting could not be achieved in 3 infants with microftalmia because of appropriate base curve was not available. Two patients abandoned the lenses for other reasons. 88.8% of patients are still wearing lenses successfully.


Contact lenses may be a safe, successful and effective treatment for aphakia. The limitation of our study was the absence of the steep curves especially for the patients with microftalmia. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
