Abstract Details

To evaluate effectiveness of radiofrequency diathermy in performing the anterior and posterior capsulorhexis and prevention the opacification of the posterior capsule in cases of congenital cataract.

Bahgat Eye Centre

19 eyes of 11 children with congenital cataract undergone cataract extraction surgery. After doing two paracentesis with MVR blade, anterior capsulorhexis is done with radiofrequency probe and the lens matter is removed by irrigation aspiration. Then the posterior capsulorhexis is done with radiofrequency diathermy and anterior vitrectomy is done.

With follow up of 12 months. One case showed interruption of anterior capsule (5.3%) and one (5.3%) case, the posterior rhexis is not completed. Postoperative 4 cases (21%) showed posterior capsular opacification. Only 2 cases (10.6%) had mild anterior segment inflammation postoperatively.

Radiofrequency diathermy is a useful technique in doing the posterior capsulorhexis in congenital cataract surgery with the advantage of easy use and less intra- and post-operative complications FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
