Abstract Details

Purpose:

Comparative estimation of the thickness of the corneal flap formed with LenSx and VisuMax femtosecond lasers, refraction, and visual acuity after FemtoLASIK operation using MEL-80 excimer laser.

Setting:

IRTC Eye Microsurgery Ekaterinburg Center, Ekaterinburg, Russia

Methods:

Two groups, 11 patients (19 eyes) in each after FemtoLASIK were studied. In group 1 corneal flap with a 12 o’clock hinge and 110 microns preset thickness was formed with LenSx femtosecond laser. In group 2 corneal flap with 100 microns preset thickness was formed with VisuMax 500 kHz femtosecond laser (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany). Corneal flap thickness was measured at day 1 after surgery in the center and at 1, 2, and 3 mm distance from the flap center in horizontal meridian using Visante optical coherence tomograph (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany) in High Resolution Corneal Single mode.

Results:

Central flap thickness was 109 ± 9 µm in Group 1 and 100 ± 3 µm in Group 2. Flap thickness in 180° meridian, group 1:107 ± 10 µm; 115 ± 8 µm; 117 ± 15 µm; group 2: 101 ± 4 µm; 101 ± 4 µm; 100 ± 4 µm; in 0° meridian, group 1: 110 ± 9 µm; 116 ± 12 µm; 113 ± 10 µm; group 2: 101 ± 3 µm; 101 ± 4 µm; 101 ± 3 µm. Pre-op and post-op UCVA, BCVA and SEe did not differ significantly between the groups.

Conclusions:

Optical coherence tomography after FemtoLASIK with MEL-80 excimer laser revealed significant corneal flap thickness variability in certain points of 0° - 180° meridian using LenSx femtosecond laser unlike VisuMax femtosecond laser.
