Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the vault post-operatively at 1 year of two posterior chamber phakic Intraocular Lenses (pIOLs), with and without a central hole for moderate to high myopia using anterior segment OCT.

Setting:

Cornea & Refractive Service, Shroff Eye Centre, A-9, Kailash Colony, New Delhi-110048, India.

Methods:

204 eyes of 102 patients underwent implantation of a pIOL with a central hole (Centreflow;V4c) in one eye, and a conventional pIOL (V4,V4b) in the fellow eye. The post-operative pIOL was assessed 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year using the RTVue OCT (Optovue Inc.)

Results:

The mean age of the patients was 28.2±5.7 years. The central hole pIOL vault was 649±123µ, 526±302µ, 518±326µ, 503±242µ and 463±158µ at 1 week, 1month, 3months, 6months and 1year respectively. The conventional pIOL vault was 629±252µ, 579±252µ, 559±316µ, 528±239µ and 488±246µ at 1week, 1month, 3months, 6months and 1year respectively. The correlation between the pIOL vault and the refractive accuracy 1 year post-operatively was not significant in both groups (Spearman correlation coefficient r = 0.23, p = 0.611 for pIOL with central hole and r = 0.12, p = 0.489 for conventional pIOL).

Conclusions:

The vault of the conventional phakic IOL and the Centreflow (V4c) pIOL was equivalent. This suggests that the presence of the central hole did not significantly affect the vault or the refractive accuracy. There was high patient satisfaction in both groups at one year.
