The official language of the Congress will be English.
Lisbon, the ‘enchanting port’ rumoured to have been founded by Ulysses on his return from Troy,
is a city that has enjoyed a particularly distinguished past. Four hundred years of
influential Moorish rule gave way to the illustrious Portuguese Age of Discovery. After
setting off from Lisbon, the legendary Vasco de Gama ‘discovered’ India, and the jewel and spice
trading routes that he subsequently established would bring fame and fortune to Lisbon for centuries
to come. In recent times, Lisbon has enjoyed a renaissance, learning to combine its celebrated
past with a vibrant European culture, creating a very unique experience for the visitor.
Today, visitors can spend the day exploring the city on a traditional
eléctrico, or tram, taking in sights such as the 12th century Lisboa Cathedral or the imposing
Jerónimos Monastery, the single most impressive monument to the spice trade, and pass the night
sampling local specialities such as frango à piri-piri, a chicken dish, and later heading on to a local
bar in the lively Bairro Alto to sample a glass of vintage port.
The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) is pleased to invite you to its
XXIII Annual Congress to be held in Lisbon, Portugal from 10th-14th September 2005. Under
the guidance of the Programme Committee the presentations, symposia, and discussion will
focus on the most recent developments, both clinical and technical, in the fields of cataract and
refractive surgery.
