Abstract Details

To compare distance corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA) results of two scleral implant incisional systems.

The Midwest Center for Sight, Chicago IL, USA

Of 330 presbyopic, emmetropic subjects recruited in a multicenter prospective clinical trial, 119 surgeries were performed using a modified incisional system design. DCNVA was assessed post-operatively at 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months.

Surgically implanted subjects using the modified incisional system reached the primary outcome measure of 20/40 or better at earlier follow-up intervals than conventional surgical patients. At 3 months, 94% of binocularly implanted subjects with the new incisional system reached 20/40 or better DCNVA compared to 83% of conventional incisional surgical subjects.

Advancements in instrumentation have resulted in improved outcomes and at earlier follow-up intervals when compared to the study-wide cohort. Instrumentation changes have improved surgical technique and reduced average surgical times resulting in earlier outcomes.
