Comparison of clinical outcomes between LASIK monovision and presbyopia-correcting non-refractive hydrogel corneal inlay

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare clinical outcomes between LASIK Monovision (MonoLASIK) and Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay and to explore the difference in methods of action.

Setting:

Oogkliniek Heuvelrug, Zeist, The Netherlands and Lasik Centrum, Boxtel, The Netherlands

Methods:

Multi-center case series of patients previously treated with Raindrop Inlay or MonoLASIK. Raindrop inlays were implanted under a 150-micron corneal flap created using a Intralase femtosecond laser. MonoLASIK treatments were targeted for mild myopia (-0.75 D to -1.25 D). Uncorrected visual acuities for distance and near, stereopsis and patient satisfaction were measured. Refractive and Wavefront measurements were collected to explore methods of action and to explain the differences in clinical outcomes.

Results:

87% of Raindrop patients (n=16) and 53% of the MonoLasik patients (n=15) achieve binocular uncorrected near 1.0 or better. Monocularly in the treated eye, UDVA was better in the Raindrop group with 74% achieving 0.6 or better compared to 40% in the MonoLasik group. Raindrop patients showed better stereopsis compared to MonoLASIK (98 secs vs. 286 secs). In Raindrop eyes, topographical and wavefront measurements showed a steepening in the central cornea generating more central power that reduces in the periphery. The shape change improves near vision without dramatically compromising distance vision when compared to MonoLasik.

Conclusions:

The Raindrop Inlay changes the shape of the cornea to provide improvements in near vision without dramatically compromising distance vision. This provides an advantage over LASIK Monovision with better distance vision and improved binocular stereopsis.
