Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the biocompatibility of the developed corneal inlays made of polymer materials based on hydroxyethylmethacrylate ( HEMA ) and olygourethanmethacrylate (OUMA) on the model of rabbit cornea.

Setting:

S. FYODOROV EYE MICROSURGERY FEDERAL STATE INSTITUTION, MOSCOW, RUSSIAN FEDERATION

Methods:

Material for the study were 3 groups of chinchilla rabbits breed.Basic group 1 of experimental animals-5 rabbits(5 eyes) were implanted corneal inlays made of HEMA. Basic group 2-5 rabbits(5 eyes) were implanted inlays made of OUMA.Group 3-control-used the second eye (10 eyes) of experimental animals from groups 1 and 2, without implantation of inlay. We made mechanical delamination of middle layers of the stroma by straight knife forming a corneal pocket with subsequent implantation of inlay. We used standard methods (biomicroscopy of the anterior segment, ophthalmoscopy) and special reseach metods (confocal microscopy and light microscopic studies on 3 month after operation).

Results:

In basic groups cornea around the lens was transparent, without visible defects of the stroma and epithelium under the lens during 2 month. Cases vascularization, inflammatory reactions or visible changes in the fundus in all groups were not detected .In confocal imaging in basic groups, we observed pseudo keratinization of epithelium
