Hermann von Helmholtz is very well known for his invention of ophthalmoscope. But he was also a prominent physician and physicist who wrote a number of scientific works including the 'Handbuch der Physiologischen Optik' (A treatise on Physiological Optics) which is presented here.

The life of Hermann Helmholtz and his works are examined here, focusing on his theories about physiological optics and the refractive function of he eye.


Hermann von Helmholtz was a profound knowledgeable of physics and medicine, and worked in many scientific fields. As a result he invented the ophthalmoscope and gave us many axioms and theories on physics and medicine.


Ophthalmology owes much of the fundamental theories correlating to the medical practice to the great scientist Hermann von Helmholtz. This presentation tried to give a taste of his genius.
