Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate and compare the visual acuity outcomes and optical performances of eyes implanted with two diffractive trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) models with or without Enhanced Depth of Focus (EDOF).

Setting:

Minoru Tomita Eye Clinic Ginza, Tokyo, Japan

Methods:

This retrospective study comprised of cataract patients who were implanted with trifocal lens including EDOF (Acriva(UD) Reviol Tri-ED611TM [VSY Biotechnology, the Netherlands], group 1) or not including EDOF (Fine VisionTM [ PhysIOL, Belgium], group2) between August 2014 and December 2015. The 6 month post-operative visual acuity, refraction, defocus curve, contrast sensitivity, and wave-front aberration were evaluated and compared between these eyes, using different IOL models.

Results:

Two hundred seventy eight (278) eyes were included in this study. Significant improvement in visual acuities and refraction was found in both groups after cataract surgery (P<0.01). The visual acuity were statistically better in group 2 than in group 1 (P<0.01). Statistically, there’s no substantial difference in the corneal higher-order aberrations found between the two groups (P>0.05). Only that the ocular higher-order aberrations in group 1 found to be significantly greater than group 2 (P<0.05).

Conclusions:

After six (6) months of post-operation, both groups, 1 & 2, have achieved excellent visual and refractive outcomes. The Trifocal IOL model without EDOF resulted in better optical performances than that of the EDOF.
