Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate distance, near vision outcomes and photic phenomena of a new design Hybrid optic multifocal IOL.

Setting:

prospective, non-randomized clinical case series, Sankara Eye Centre, Coimbatore, India

Methods:

40 eyes of 40 patients with senile cataract were implanted with Hybrid optic IOL, a novel design intraocular lens with refractive optic for distance and a single central diffractive optic element for near, after phacoemulsification. UCVA, BCVA for distance vision and near vision were recorded at 1 week post-operative and 6 weeks after surgery. Visual complaints of the patients were recorded. The new design hybrid optics IOL is manufactured and supplied by AI optics, Chennai, India.

Results:

40 out of 40 patients had a BCVA for distance 20/20 and near vision with distance correction N6. UCVA of 36 patients is 20/30 or better, 4 patients is 20/40 .40 patients had UCVA for near N8 or better and 34 patients had UCVA for near N6.The most common reason for spectacle is residual astigmatism. The commonest post-operative complaints were temporal shadow in 20 patients on first visit. It has significantly reduced to 7 patients at 6 weeks review. All the patients were satisfied with their subjective visual quality and none of them reported any photic phenomena on questioning.Patient satisfaction is good in all 40 patients with spectacle independence in 36 patients.

Conclusions:

The new Hybrid optics IOL successfully restores both near and distance vision without photic phenomenon. It eliminates the visual disturbances associated with diffractive optic design IOL for distance vision.
