Abstract Details

Purpose:

In modern multifocal designs the incoming light can be nearly directed to as many focal points as intended with varying light intensity. In this evaluation 2 multifocal IOL concepts should be compered using an optical bench.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Medical University Vienna

Methods:

The Symfony (Abbott) and the AT.LISA tri (Carl Zeiss Meditec) were examined using an optical bench with an artificial cornea exhibiting a spherical aberration of 0,1 µm. “Trough Focus Response” curves were determined in best centration with an pupil opening of 4,7 mm. The measurements were done with green and white light.

Results:

“Trough Focus Response” curves with green light for the Symfony shows two very close but distinct focal points. Using white light this two focal point merge to one focal point. The AT.LISA tri exhibits three strictly separated focal points in green and white light. The incoming light is directed mainly to the distance focal point.

Conclusions:

The Symfony exhibits two very close focal points with the aim to enlarge the depth of focus whereas the AT.LISA tri provide three focal points for distance, intermediate and near vision.
