Abstract Details

Purpose:

One year follow up of functional results and quality of vision after the bilateral cataract surgery with implantation of a bioanalogic, polyfocal intraocular lens.

Setting:

Medilux Eye Centrum Galanta

Methods:

The cataract surgery was done by incision 2.75 mm, capsulorhexis 6 mm and implantation by injector into the capsular bag using WIOL-CF (MEDICEM Technology s.r.o., Czech Republic). Binocular uncorrected visual acuity was evaluated for distance (Snellen Eye Chart), intermediate (70 cm) and near (40 cm) on reading tables. The quality of vision, glare, halos, spectacle independence and the personal satisfaction (NEI-VFQ14) of the patients was assessed with questionnaires.

Results:

13 patients (26 eyes/mean age of 58.5 year) underwent uneventful cataract surgery. Mean binocular UDVA 0.05, UIVA 0.13 and UNVA 0.19 logMAR. Patients ≤60 years were found to be better in VA than for higher age group (P≤0.05). Mean monocular UDVA 0.09, UIVA 0.16 and UNVA 0.21 logMAR. Similarly to binocular, uncorrected monocular visual acuities depend also on patient age. Spectacle free for daily activities driving and reading 92% of patients. Without disturbing optical phenomena 85% of patients, only 15% of patients report mild glare and halo. All patients express subjective satisfaction.

Conclusions:

Based on differences between age groups, it can be suggested that better results of younger age group can be due to better neuroadaptation in these patients. The implantation of bioanalogic, MEDICEM´s polyfocal intraocular lens WIOL-CF enriches the cataract and presbyopia solutions. The lens provides long term spectacle independence, and high subjective satisfaction of patients.
