Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate 6 months visual outcomes in patients who have undergone implantation of a polyfocal, bioanalogic intraocular lens.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Hospital Most, Czech Republic

Methods:

All patients were implanted by the same surgeon using the same procedure. The distance, intermediate and near visual acuities were evaluated six months after surgery using logMAR charts.

Results:

12 patients (14 eyes) with an average age of 68.6 ± 14.2 years (range: 45 to 86 years) underwent implantation (10 monolateral, 2 bilateral) of a polyfocal bioanalogic IOL (WIOL-CF, MEDICEM Technology s.r.o., Czech Republic). Six months after surgery, the mean monocular uncorrected distance visual acuity was 0.07 ± 0.15logMAR, the mean monocular uncorrected intermediate (70 cm) visual acuity was 0.06 ± 0.17logMAR and the mean monocular uncorrected near (40 cm) visual acuity was 0.20 ± 0.16logMAR.

Conclusions:

Implantation of polyfocal, bioanalogic, large optics IOL in patients with cataract was a simple, safe, and accurate option. Extended depth of focus design and biocompatible material provide surgeons with a feasible option for meeting patient expectations of an enhanced lifestyle resulting from long-term decreased spectacle dependence.
