Visual performance of three presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the visual performance of the Symfony Enlarged Depth of Focus IOL vs the AT Lisa Trifocal 839 (Diffractive) IOL vs The Physiol Trifocal (Diffractive) at 3 months

Setting:

Optimax and Ultralase Eye Clinics UK

Methods:

50 consecutive refractive lens exchange patients implanted with Symfony IOL bilaterally. Another 50 consecutive refractive lens exchange patients implanted with the AT Lisa IOL bilaterally and another50 consecutive refractive lens exchange patients implanted with the PhysIOL Fine Vision IOL bilaterally. Follow Up at 1 week, 2, 3 & 6 months post op was performed. Monocular and binocular uncorrected distance, intermediate and near visual acuity was measured. Photic phenomena rates, spectacle independence and patient satisfaction were documented.

Results:

Post op UDVA (decimal) was 1.01 +/- 0.16 in the Symfony group vs 1.00 +/- 0.11 in the At Lisa group vs 0.95 +/-0.09 in the Physiol group. Intermediate vision was 0.9 +/- 0.21 vs 0.7 +/- 0.21 vs 0.85 +/- 0.15 respectively. Near Vision was 0.6 +/-0.16 for the vs 0.71 +/- 0.21 vs 0.96 +/- 0.08 respectively. 94.4 % of the Symfony group were spectacle independent at all distances vs 100% for both the the At Lisa and Physiol groups. 5.6% of the Symfony patients reported troublesome dysphotopsia vs 13% in the At Lisa and 20% in the Physiol group. 6.7% of AT lisa patients complained of disabling symptoms. Patient satisfaction was highest in the Symfony group.

Conclusions:

All 3 IOL produce excellent results with high levels of spectacle independence. The Symfony IOL produces better levels of distance and intermediate visual acuity. Physiol and AT Lisa IOLs produced better near visual acuity. There is a higher frequency of dysphotopsia with the AT Lisa 839MP and FineVision IOLs. Dysphotopsia’s can contribute to patient dissatisfaction despite good spectacle independence
