Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare visual performance of the Symfony IOL in patients who have never undergone previous refractive surgery versus those who have undergone previous LASIK/PRK/LASEK

Setting:

Optimax and Ultralase Eye Clnics

Methods:

50 consecutive refractive lens exchange patients implanted with Symfony IOL bilaterally were compared with 30 Refractive lens Exchange patients who had previous laser vision correction (LVC). Follow Up at 1 week, 2, 3 & 6 months post op was performed. Monocular and binocular uncorrected distance, intermediate and near visual acuity was measured. Patient satisfaction was also documented.

Results:

Post op UDVA (decimal) was 1.01 +/- 0.16 in the non LVC Symfony group vs 0.93 +/-0.17 in the prior LVC group. Intermediate Visual acuity (decimal)was 0.9 +/- 0.21 in the non LVC versus 0.80 +/- 0.31 in the LVC group. Near vision (decimal) was 0.6 +/- 0.16 in the non LVC group vs 0.55 +/- 0.25 in the LVC group. 94.4% of non LVC patients were spectacle independent at all distances versus 80% in the Prior LVC group.

Conclusions:

Post LVC patients remain a challenging refractive group when considering Presbyopia IOL correction. Careful patient selection can enable good refractive outcomes and spectacle independence.
