Abstract Details

To evaluate the near visual performance of an extended range of vision presbyopia correcting lens. This new class of lens is designed to provide near vision performance for everyday tasks while minimising adverse visual phenomena often associated with traditional multifocal lenses.

Single centre, 2 surgeon study. Private practice.

A cohort of patients who had bilateral Symfony extended range of vision intraocular lens implanted (Abbott Medical Optics) had their near vision tested using a validated reading speed test. A control group of phakic young adults with measured normal accommoadtion were tested to determine a benchmark reading speed. The two groups where compared. Furthermore, contrast sensitivity was measured and an assessment of adverse visual phenomena was made.

The study patients had excellent near visual performance with minimal adverse visual phenomena.

Extended range of vision lenses are useful in correcting presbyopia while minimising the barrier of night time halos.
