Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the Visual Function Questionnaire-14 (VF-14) scores of bilateral implantation of phakic intraocular lenses (pIOL) in Group 1; and monolateral Femto-SubBowman’s Keratomileusis (Fs-SBK) on one eye with implantation of phakic IOL on the second eye in Group 2.

Setting:

«Astana Vision» clinic, Astana city, Republic of Kazakhstan.

Methods:

29 consecutive cases with implantation of pIOL (ICL STAAR) with PreOp mean MRSE -15.29 D (-10.00 to -20.50 D) with mean astigmatism -2.57 D (-0.00 to -6.00 D) was performed. 9 cases of monolateral Fs-SBK was performed using EX500 and FS-200 lasers (Alcon) with PreOp mean MRSE -6.90 D (-4.25 to -9.90 D) with mean astigmatism -2.39 D (-0.25 to -5.00 D). 6 months follow-up was performed. We used VF-14 (Steinberg et al, 1994) as a method for assessing the quality of the visual function after surgery in Group 1 (10 patients) and in Group 2 (9 patients).

Results:

Mean PostOp UDVA in cases with pIOL was: 0.78 against 0.44 PreOp CDVA with PostOp mean MRSE -0.26 D (0.00 to -1.75 D). Mean PostOp UDVA in cases after Fs-SBK was: 0.87 against 0.72 PreOp CDVA with PostOp mean MRSE -0.06 D (-0.00 to -0.50 D). Mean VF-14 score in Group 1 and in Group 2 was 97.63% and 96.92%, respectively. Binocular UDVA in Group 1 and in Group 2 was 1.02 and 1.07, respectively. Binocular UNVA in Group 1 and in Group 2 was 0.93 and 1.00, respectively.

Conclusions:

In cases of anisometropia the Fs-SBK on the eye with lower degree of myopia combined with implantation of phakic IOL on the second eye, also as a bilateral implantation of pIOL, show high refractive and visual outcomes at various distances with improving patients’ health-related quality of life.
